"Not Unprepared" Isn't Good Enough
You don’t see a founder who runs a great business show up unprepared.
They show up locked in and on the ball.
Do you think there's a connection between their preparedness and their running a great business?
I do.
Preparedness and running a great business go together.
So does the opposite pair: showing up half-ready and a business that stays stuck at okay.
And we're all choosing one path or the other.
You know what the lesser path looks like? You walk out of a meeting thinking "I could have been better prepared."
But that's not actually helpful.
The real question is, should you have been better prepared?
If pushed to answer, you might say "I wasn't UN-prepared... but I could've done better."
As if “not being unprepared” is the standard.
But it’s not. If “not unprepared” is your standard, you’re bringing mediocre.
You’re showing up to not embarrass yourself rather than showing up to be excellent.
You will get very different results.
But - once you see that, everything changes.
Showing up prepared is a sign.
It shows that you’re operating as the leader you’re aspiring to become.
That you’ve moved beyond the old version of yourself.
The old version of you says, "I can show up and figure it out."
That version was probably competent, and it could get by - most of the time.
The new you says, "I show up ready to make this the most valuable it can be."
This version of you isn't just getting by. This one's building something.
Then you can start playing a different game entirely.
Every conversation, every touchpoint, every room you walk into becomes a chance to practice the standard you're growing into. Clear, aware, and leading instead of reacting.
Being a prepared leader turns everything in front of you into an opportunity.
And that's so much bigger than just a meeting, because of where you sit.
You are the most powerful lever in your business.
Nothing else in it has your leverage.
Change how you show up, and everything downstream changes with you.
